Bluemlisalp Header Tutorial

This tutorial is my own creation, any resemblance to another tutorial is purely coincidental


Needed

Paint Shop Pro 9 (Tutorial should work with other PSP versions, some adjustments might be necessary)
Free 30 day PSP trial from Corel, available here
Letter Creator from Incredimail (optional), available here

Graphic
Image of choice
You can either choose a more or less square image or a section of your image

The frame (tube) has a set color, choose an image, which will go with the frame color

Pattern
Brick 01, available here

Texture
Small Stones, available here

Mask
Mask 006, available here

Tube
stonewindowframe-sdh, available here

Performance Notes
This tutorial is in 5 parts:
- Preparation
- Frame
- Background
- Brickwall
- Assembling stationary in LC

The settings for different Tools will stay the same throughout the tutorial, unless new setting instructions are given

Don't forget to save your work often



Preparation

1a) Download the Pattern and place it into your Patterns Folder
(Hints available here)

1b) Download the Texture and place it into your Texture Folder

1c) Download the Mask and place it into your Mask Folder

1d) Download the Tube and place it into your Tube Folder

2) File > Open
Open graphic of choice in PSP

3) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
Close original

4) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels/Inch
Height = No greater than 800 pixels
Width = No greater than 800 pixels

5) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharpen Mask
Settings:
Radius = 2.00, Strength = 10
Clipping = 5
Luminance only = Not checked

6) Edit > Copy

7) File > Open
Open the tube in PSP

8) Window > Duplicate
Close original

9) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels/Inch
Height = 100 %, Width = 100 %

10) Layers Palette
Select Top Layer and Layers > Delete
(Delete Watermark)

11) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharpen Mask

12) Materials Palette
Click into Foreground Color,
Click on Pattern tab and choose Brick01
Settings:
Angle = 0, Scale = 100



Frame

13) On your Tube image
Image > Canvas Size
Settings:
Lock aspect ratio = Not Checked
Width = 800 pixels, Height = 800 pixels
Placement = Centre

14) Edit > Paste > Paste as New Layer

15) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

16) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = NOT checked
Resolution = 72.000
Height = 90 %, Width = 90 %

17) Move Tool (M)
Move graphic
(If necessary)

Repeat Resizing and Moving the graphic until you have the section of the image you want within the frame
Do NOT worry about overlapping image edges, we will take care of them, but make sure that the image fills the inside of the Frame tube

18) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharpen Mask

19) Layers Palette
Bottom Layer
Turn off visibility

20) Magic Wand Tool
Settings:
Mode = Replace
Match mode = RGB Value
Tolerance = 0
Sample Merged = Checked
Contiguous = Checked
Feather = 0
Anti-alias = Checked, Outside

21) Select outside of Tube frame

22) Layers Palette
Bottom Layer
Turn visibility back on
Keep selected

23) Layers > Merge > Merge Visible
Keep selected

24) Edit > Clear
Keep selected

25) Selections > Invert

26) Image > Crop to Selection

27) Layers > New Raster Layer

28) Add Watermark(s)

29) Dropper Tool (E)
Select a light Background Color from the Frame or image inside the frame
(I choose #FCF4E0)

30) File > Save As
Settings:
Save as type = .pspimage

Save file to where you will find it again easily
This frame can be used to do the Header Tutorial OR the Sideborder Tutorial

Do NOT close image



Background

31) File > New
Settings:
Width = 200 pixels, Height = 200 pixels
Resolution = 72.000
Raster Background = Checked
Transparent

32) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Settings:
Match mode = None
Sample merged = Checked
Blend mode = Normal
Opacity = 100

33) Right click to Flood fill with the Background Color

34) Layers > Duplicate

35) Effects > Texture Effects > Texture
Settings:
Texture = Small stones
Size = 60
Smoothness = 0, Depth = 1,
Ambience = 0, Shininess = 0
Color = #E7CB45
Angle = 315
Intensity = 50, Elevation = 30

36) Layers Palette
Double click on Top Layer in order to open Layer Properties
Settings:
General:
Name = Copy of Raster 1
Blend mode = Luminance (Legacy)
Opacity = 28
Link set = 0
Highlight in layers palette = Not checked
Layer is visible = Checked
Lock transparency = Not checked

37) Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

38) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Default

Setting Tiling Effect

If you click on the icon indicated by the hand, PSP will set it to default

39) Materials Palette
Click into Background Color,
Click on Pattern tab and choose your Background
Settings:
Angle = 0, Scale = 100

The Background can be used to do the Header Tutorial OR the Sideborder Tutorial

40) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer
Settings:
Compression = 25
Chroma subsampling = YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1 (None)
Save Exif data = Not checked

Do NOT close image



Brickwall

41) File > New
Settings:
Width = 820 pixels
Height = 700 pixels
Resolution = 72.000
Raster Background = Checked
Transparent

42) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to Flood fill with the Brick pattern

43) Layers > Load/Save > Load Mask from Disk
Settings:
Mask = Mask 006
Source luminance = Checked
Fit to canvas = Checked
Invert transparency = Not checked
Hide all mask = Checked
Load

44) Layers > Merge > Merge Group

45) Minimize Brickwall

46) Restore Up Framed Picture

47) Edit > Copy Merged
Minimize or close Framed Picture

48) Restore Up Brickwall

49) Edit > Paste > Paste as New Layer

50) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 3
Opacity = 66, Blur = 3.00
Color = Black
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

51) Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

52) Image > Resize
Settings:
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Height = 550 pixels
Height = Will adjust itself
(Or a size of your liking)

53) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharpen Mask

54) Layers > New Raster Layer

55) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

56) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to Flood fill new Layer with Background pattern

57) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

58) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer



Letter Creator

59) Open Letter Creator

60) Header > Image
Look for the JPEG file of the Brickwall/Frame
Align = Center

61) Body > Image
Look for the JPEG file of the finished Background tile
Click on "Tile"
Choose Font and Font Size
Choose Text Color
Choose Link Color
Margins: Top 0, Left 10, Right 10

62) Footer
Your name
Reference and link to Tube and (if possible) to image
Name of tutorial "Bluemlisalp Header" and link to this page

63) Finish
Choose Letter Name and Collection Name
Save Project
Add to Incredimail
