Heather's Rhubarb Wine Frame & BG Tutorial

I have used one of my own photographs for this tutorial

This tutorial is dedicated to my dear friend Heather Boynton (June 1943 - April 2013).
Heather's home made wine was legendary, and her rhubarb wine my favourite.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginners & Adventurous Others

Knowledge of using Filters is necessary (or learn how to get started with my ABC Tutorials)

This tutorial is my own creation; any resemblance to another tutorial is purely coincidental

Program shortcuts will be given in parentheses



Needed

Paint Shop Pro - I used X2
(Tutorial will work with other versions)
Free 30 day trial from Corel, available here

Width greater than height - central focus.

Performance Notes

This tutorial is in 3 parts:
- Preparation
- Frame
- Background

The settings for different Tools and Effects will stay the same throughout the tutorial, unless new setting instructions are given

Preparation

1) Download and install Filters if necessary
(If you install filters you need to restart PSP afterwards)

2) Download the Mask and save to your Mask Folder

3) Download the Texture and save to your Texture Folder

4) File > Open
Open image of choice

5) Window > Duplicate
Close original

6) Dropper Tool (E)
Left click in image to choose a dark Foreground color
(I chose #194827)
The color will dominate your finished result

7) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels / Inch
Width = 450 Pixels
Height = Will self adjust

8) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharp Mask
Settings:
Radius = 2.00, Strength = 10
Clipping = 5
Luminance only = Not checked
(or a setting of your liking)

9) Edit > Copy

10) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
Minimize one copy



Frame

11) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Symmetric = Checked
Size in pixels = 30
Color = Your Foreground Color

12) Layers > Promote Background Layer

13) Selections > Select All

14) Selections > Modify > Contract
Settings:
Number of pixels = 30

15) Selections > Promote Selection to Layer

16) Selections > Select None

17) Layer Palette
Activate Bottom Layer

18) Selections > Select All

19) Edit > Paste Into Selection

20) Selections > Select None

21) Effects > Plugins > Simple > 4 Way Average

22) Layers > New Raster Layer

23) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Settings:
Match mode = None
Use all layers = Not checked
Blend mode = Normal
Opacity = 100

24) Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground Color

25) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity of flood filled layer to 65 - 85

26) Layers > Merge Down

27) Effects > Texture Effects > Texture
Settings:
Texture = LB_texture08
Size = 25%, Smoothness = 0
Depth = 2, Ambience = 0
Shininess = 0,
Color = White
Angle = 315, Intensity = 50
Elevation = 30

28) Layers Palette
Activate Top Layer

29) Layers > Load/Save Mask > Load Mask From Disk
Settings:
Mask = lbm57
Source luminance = Checked
Fit to layer = Checked
Invert transparency = Checked
Hide all mask = Checked

30) Layers > Merge > Merge Group

31) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = -1 (Minus)
Opacity = 81, Blur = 2.00
Color = White
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

32) Layers > New Raster Layer

33) Selections > Select All

34) Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 0
Opacity = 75, Blur = 23.00
Color = Black
Fill interior with color = Not checked

35) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Symmetric = Checked
Size in pixels = 36
Color = Black

36) Layers > New Raster Layer

37) Selections > Select All

38) Edit > Paste Into Selection

39) Selections > Select None

40) Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur
Settings:
Radius = 14.00

41) Effects > Plugins > Simple > Top Left Mirror

42) Effects > Texture Effects > Fine Leather
Settings:
Color = White
Angle = 153, Blur = 28
Transparency = 246
Number of furrows = 38
Lengths of furrows = 7

Do NOT Close Frame



Background

56) On Frame
Activate bottom layer
Edit > Copy

57) Edit > Paste As New Image

58) Image > Resize

59) Effects > Plugins > Simple > Pizza Slice Mirror

60) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

61) Layers > Promote Background Layer

Width = 152 Pixels
Height = 152
Placement = Centre

63) Effects > Distortion Effect > Twirl
Settings:
Degrees = -67 (Minus)

64) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 0
Opacity = 81, Blur = 2.00
Color = White
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

65) Image > Canvas Size
Settings:
Lock aspect ratio = Not Checked
Width = 2000 Pixels (or Width of your choice)
Height = 152
Placement = Left Middle Arrow

66) Layers > New Raster Layer

67) Layers > Arrange > Move Down

68) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground Color

69) Effects > Texture Effects > Texture

70) Optional:
Layers Palette
Activate Top Layer
Move Tool (M)
Move image to the left into position of your liking

71) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer

Now you can assemble the stationery in LC or OE/Windows Mail or Wikmail.
