Program shortcuts will be given in parentheses



Needed

Paint Shop Pro - I used X2
(Tutorial will work with other PSP versions, some adjustments might be necessary)
Free 30 day PSP trial from Corel, available here
Letter Creator from Incredimail (optional), available here


Graphic
Graphic of choice, width greater than height


Performance Notes
This tutorial is in 2 parts:
- Preparation
- Sideborder

The settings for different Tools and Effects will stay the same throughout the tutorial, unless new setting instructions are given

Don't forget to save your work often



Preparation

1) File > Open
Open image of choice

2) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
This will be known as FirstImage for the rest of the tutorial
Close original

3) Dropper Tool (E)
Left click in image to choose a light color as Foreground Color
(I chose #eeddc5)

4) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)

5) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels / Inch
Width = Will self adjust
Height = 148 Pixels

6) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharp Mask
Settings:
Radius = 10.00
Strength = 20
Clipping = 7
Luminance only = Not checked
(Or a setting of your liking)

7) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
The 2 small images will be known as SecondImage and ThirdImage for the rest of the tutorial

8) Activate FirstImage by clicking on its Title Bar

9) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = NOT Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Width = 300 Pixels
Height = 400 Pixels

10) Activate SecondImage by clicking on its Title Bar

11) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Symmetric = Checked
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black
Write down new Width

12) Activate ThirdImage by clicking on its Title Bar

13) Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope
Settings:
Horizontal Offset (%) = 50
Vertical Offset (%) = 40
Rotation Angle = 10
Scale factor = -25 (Minus)
Number of petals = 10
Number of orbits = 1
Radial suction = 46
Edge mode = Wrap

14) Image > Add Borders



Sideborder

15) Activate FirstImage by clicking on its Title Bar

16) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

If you click on the icon indicated by the hand, PSP will set it to default

17) Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur
Settings:
Radius = 18.50

18) Effects > Art Media Effects > Brush Strokes
Settings:
Softness = 78, Bristles = 94
Width = 6, Opacity = 42
Length = 19, Density = 81
Angle = 82
Color = Your Foreground Color

19) Layers > New Raster Layer

20) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Settings:
Match mode = None
Use all layers = Not Checked
Blend mode = Normal
Opacity = 100

21) Left click to flood fill new Layer with Foreground Color

22) Layers Palette

Change Blend Mode to Soft Light

Double click on the flood filled Layer to open up Layer Properties

Blend mode = Soft Light

Optional:
If your background is too colorful for your liking:

a) Layers > New Raster Layer

b) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Left click to flood fill new Layer with Foreground Color

c) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity of your layer to a setting of your liking

26) Selection Tool (S) > Custom selection

Top = 25, Left = 20
Right = Your SecondImage width + 20

30) Edit > Paste > Paste Into Selection

32) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 1
Opacity = 60
Blur = 3.00
Color = Black
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

33) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = -1 (Minus)

34) Image > Free Rotate
Settings:
Direction = Left
Degrees = Free = 12.00
All layers = Not checked
Rotate single layer around canvas center = Not checked

35) Layers > New Raster Layer

36) Selection Tool (S) > Custom selection
Settings:
Top = 225
Left = 300 less (ThirdImage width + 20) *****
Right = 280
Bottom = 375

***** My Example:  
ThirdImage width = 199  
+         20  
Total = 219  

300 - 219 = 81
My Setting for Left is 81


37) Activate ThirdImage by clicking on its Title Bar

38) Edit > Copy

39) Activate FirstImage by clicking on its Title Bar

40) Edit > Paste > Paste Into Selection

41) Selections > Select None

42) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

43) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 1

44) Image > Free Rotate
Settings:
Direction = Right

45) Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

46) Image > Canvas Size
Settings:
Lock aspect ratio = Not Checked
Width = 1280 pixels*****
Height = 400
Placement = Left Middle Arrow

*****or width of your computer resolution, e.g. 1024 or 1600

47) Layers > New Raster Layer

48) Selection Tool (S) > Custom selection
Settings:
Top = 0
Left = 300, Right = 315
Bottom = 400

49) Edit > Paste > Paste Into Selection
(It should be your ThirdImage image)

50) Selections > Select None

51) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

52) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = -1 (Minus)

53) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Corner = Checked
Vertical = Checked
Vertical offset = 0
Transition = 50

54) Layers > New Raster Layer

55) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

55) Dropper Tool (E)
Right click in image to choose a color as Background color
(I chose #bea488)

You might wish to use your existing Foreground color

56) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Right click to flood fill new Layer with Background Color

Optional:
You might wish to use your existing Foreground color instead

57) Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Add Noise
Settings:
Random = Checked
Noise = 5 %
Monochrome = Checked

58) Effects > Distortion Effect > Wind
Settings:
From right = Checked
Wind strength = 30

59) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

60) Layers > New Raster Layer

61) Layers > Arrange > Bring to Top

62) Add Watermark(s)

63) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer
Settings:
Set Compression value to = 25
Chroma subsampling = YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1 (None)
Save Exif data = Not checked


You are done!
Now you can assemble the stationery in LC or OE
