Renaissance Tapestry Frame & BG Tutorial

I have used one of my own photographs for this tutorial

Skill Level: Intermediate
No outside Filters

This tutorial is my own creation, any resemblance to another tutorial is purely coincidental

Needed

Paint Shop Pro - I used 9
(Tutorial should work with other PSP versions, some adjustments might be necessary)
Free 30 day PSP trial from Corel, available here
Letter Creator from Incredimail (optional), available here

Image
Graphic of choice, width greater than height

Pattern
Gold Pattern Arguld10, available here
(or a Pattern of your choice)
This will be known as "Gold Pattern" for the rest of the tutorial

Performance Notes
This tutorial is in 4 parts:
- Preparation
- Pattern "Tapestry"
- Frame
- Background

The settings for different Tools and Effects will stay the same throughout the tutorial, unless new setting instructions are given

Don't forget to save your work often

Preparation

1) Download the Gold Pattern and place into your Pattern Folder
(I keep all "extras" in a folder in "My Documents".
You can see here how I do it)

2) File > Open
Open Graphic of choice

3) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
Close original

4) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000
Width = No greater than 414 pixels
Height = No greater than 354 pixels

5) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharp Mask
Settings:
Radius = 2.00, Strength = 10
Clipping = 5
Luminance only = Not checked

6) Dropper Tool (E)
Left click in graphic to choose a medium-dark to dark color as Foreground Color
(I chose #305a2d)
This color will dominate your frame end result

7) Window > Duplicate twice
Minimize two copies of the Graphic

Pattern "Tapestry"

8) Image > Resize
Settings:
Width = 300 pixels
Height = Will self adjust

9) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Default Setting

If you click on the icon indicated by the hand, PSP will set it to default

10) Effects > Distortion Effects > Twirl
Settings:
Degrees = 533

11) Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope
Settings:
Horizontal Offset (%) = 34
Vertical Offset (%) = 68
Rotation Angle = 264
Scale factor = -26 (Minus)
Number of petals = 3
Number of orbits = 1
Radial suction = 90
Edge mode = Wrap

12) Effects > Edge Effects > Enhance

13) Layers > New Raster Layer

14) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Settings:
Match mode = None
Sample merged = Not checked
Blend mode = Normal
Opacity = 100

15) Left click to Flood fill new Layer with Foreground Color

16) Layers > Duplicate

17) Layers > Duplicate

18) Layers Palette
Raster 1 (Flood filled Layer)
Change Blend mode to Hard Light

19) Layers Palette
Copy of Raster 1
Change Blend mode to Soft Light

20) Layers Palette
Copy (2) of Raster 1
Keep Blend mode at normal, BUT change opacity to 36

21) Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

22) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

This will be known as "Tapestry Pattern" for the rest of the tutorial

Optional:
You might wish to save this Pattern to your PSP Pattern and/or Texture Folder(s) for future use

23) Minimize Tapestry Pattern
Do NOT close

Frame

24) Restore Up
One of your minimized graphics

25) Edit > Copy

26) Layers > New Raster Layer

27) Selections > Select All

28) Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 2
Opacity = 60, Blur = 15.00
Color = Black
Fill interior with color = Not checked

29) Layers > New Raster Layer

30) Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = -2 (Minus)

31) Materials Palette
Change Foreground to Pattern
Settings:
Pattern = Tapestry
Angle = 135, Scale = 50
Texture = Not checked

32) Materials Palette
Change Background to Pattern
Settings:
Pattern = Gold Pattern
Angle = 0, Scale = 100
Texture = Not checked

33) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Symmetric = Checked
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

34) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 2
Color = Any Color not in image

35) Magic Wand Tool
Settings:
Mode = Replace
Match mode = RGB Value
Tolerance = 0
Sample merged = Checked
Contiguous = Checked
Feather = 0
Anti-alias = Checked
Outside

36) Select new border

37) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to Flood fill selected border with Gold Pattern

38) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

39) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 9
Color = Any Color not in image

40) Magic Wand Tool
Select new Border

41) Edit > Paste > Paste Into Selection

42) Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur
Settings:
Radius = 21.00

43) Effects > Distortion Effects > Pixelate
Settings:
Symmetric = Checked
Block width = 5
Block height = 5

44) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

45) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 2
Color = Any Color not in image

46) Magic Wand Tool
Select new Border

47) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to Flood fill selected border with Gold Pattern

48) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

49) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 34
Color = Any Color not in image

50) Magic Wand Tool
Select new Border

51) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to Flood fill selected border with Tapestry Pattern

52) Optional:
Should the "Tapestry" Pattern color not look right with your graphic:
Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colorize
Settings:
Your choice

If the eye (Proof) to the left of the dice is clicked, you will see the changes on the image itself

53) Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
Settings:
Bevel = #2, Width = 15
Smoothness = 33, Depth = 12
Ambience = -20 (Minus)
Shininess = 0
Color = White, Angle = 315
Intensity = 30, Elevation = 50

54) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 2
Opacity = 75
Blur = 12.00
Color = Black
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

55) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = -2 (Minus)

56) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

57) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 2
Color = Any Color not in image

58) Magic Wand Tool
Select new border

59) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to Flood fill selected border with Gold Pattern

60) Image > Add Borders
Settings:

Settings:
Set compression value to = 25
Chroma subsampling = YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1 (None)
Save Exif data = Not checked

Do NOT close Frame

Background

75) Selection Tool (S) > Custom selection
Settings:
Top = 70
Left = 0, Right = 68
Bottom = 370
Make sure that the Bottom Setting is not lower than the start of the bottom section of the Frame, adjust Setting if necessary

76) Edit > Copy Merged

77) Edit > Paste > Paste As New Image

78) Image > Canvas Size
Settings:
Lock aspect ratio = Not Checked
Width = 1280 pixels*****
Height = Height of your image
Placement = Left Middle Arrow

*****or width of your computer resolution, e.g. 1024 or 1600

79) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Settings:
Vertical = 0, Horizontal = 5
Opacity = 45, Blur = 12.00
Color = Black
(Or a Setting of your liking)

80) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Edge = Checked, Vertical = Checked
Width = 50, Transition = 50

81) Layers > New Raster Layer

82) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

83) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to Flood fill new Layer with Tapestry Pattern

84) Optional:
(If you have colorized the Tapestry Pattern in the frame at Step #52)
Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colorize

85) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Default

86) Restore Up
The minimized image we have not done any work on

87) Edit > Copy

88) Activate Background Canvas by clicking on its Title Bar

89) Layers > New Raster Layer

90) Selections > Select All

91) Edit > Paste > Paste Into Selection

92) Selections > Select None

93) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

94) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity of layer to 48

95) Layers > New Raster Layer

96) Materials Palette
Change Foreground from Pattern to Foreground Color

97) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to Flood fill new Layer with Foreground Color

98) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity of Flood filled Layer to 90
(Or a Setting of your liking)

99) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer

You are done!
Now you can assemble the stationery in LC or OE.
