Trumpets of Summer Frame and BG Tutorial

I have used one of my own photographs for this tutorial


Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Knowledge of using Filters necessary
(or learn how to get started with my ABC Tutorials)

This tutorial is my own creation, any resemblance to another tutorial is purely coincidental

Program shortcuts will be given in parentheses



Needed

Paint Shop Pro - I used X2
(Tutorial will work with other PSP versions, some adjustments might be necessary)
Free 30 day PSP trial from Corel, available here


Image
Graphic of choice
Needs to have central focus
Width needs to be greater than height


Filters
Simple Filters, available here


Texture
Linen, available here
(or a Texture of your choice)


Pattern
Arguld10, available here
(or a Pattern of your choice)
This will be known as "Gold Pattern" for the rest of the tutorial


Performance Notes
This tutorial is in 5 parts:
- Preparation
- Misted Image
- Brushed BG Pattern
- Frame
- Background

The Settings for different Tools and Effects will stay the same throughout the tutorial, unless new setting instructions are given

Preparation

1) Download and install filters if necessary
(If you install filters you need to restart PSP afterwards)

2) Download the Texture and save to your Texture Folder.
Download the Gold Pattern and save to your Pattern Folder

3) If you do not have the Rulers showing:
View > Rulers

4) File > Open
Open image of choice

5) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
Close original

6) Image > Resize
Settings:
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels / Inch
Width = Not less than 500 Pixels
Height = Not less than 375

7) If your image is larger:
Crop Tool (R)
Settings:
Width = 500, Height = 375
Units = Pixels

Move the rectangle with the middle node to select the area of choice

Click check mark to crop

8) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharp Mask
Settings:
Radius = 1.00, Strength = 47
Clipping = 5
Luminance only = Checked
(or a setting of your liking)

9) Dropper Tool (E)
Left click to choose a light Foreground color
(I chose #e7fad6)
Right click to choose a very dark Background color
(I chose #193006)

10) Layers > Promote Background Layer
(if necessary)

11) Window > Duplicate twice
Minimize



Misted Image

12) Selection Tool (S)
Settings:
Selection type = Ellipse
Mode = Replace
Feather = 70
Anti-alias = Checked

13) Draw an Ellipse around the center of your image

14) Selections > Invert

15) Edit > Clear

16) Optional:
Repeat Edit > Clear
Until you are happy with your image

17) Selections > Select None
This will be known as "Misted Image" for the rest of the tutorial

18) Window > Duplicate

19) Edit > Copy



Brushed BG Pattern

20) On misted image:
Image > Resize
Settings:
Width = No greater than 250 Pixels
Height = Will self adjust

21) File > Export > Custom Brush
Give it a name you can easily remember

22) Close brush image

23) File > New
Settings:
Width = 265 Pixels
Height = 265
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels / Inch
Raster Background = Checked
Transparent = Checked

24) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Settings:
Match mode = None
Use all layers = Not checked
Blend mode = Normal
Opacity = 100

25) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill with Foreground Color

26) Brush Tool (B)
Settings:
Brush = Brush you made earlier
Size = 250, Step = 32
Density = 100, Rotation = 0
Opacity = 100
Blend mode = Normal
Continuous = Not checked
Wet Look Paint = Not checked

27) Find center of your image and right click once

28) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Default

29) Layers > New Raster Layer

30) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground Color

31) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity of layer to 78
This will be known as "Brushed BG Pattern " for the rest of the tutorial
Do NOT close



Frame

32) On graphic:
Effects > Plugins > Simple > 4 Way Average

33) Edit > Paste As New Layer
(misted image)

34) Layers > New Raster Layer

35) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

36) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill new layer with Background color

37) Optional:
Layers Palette
You might wish to reduce the opacity of your layer with the applied 4 Way Average Filter

38) Layers > Merge > Merge All (Flatten)

39) Selections > Select All

40) Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout
Settings:
Vertical & Horizontal = 0
Opacity = 60, Blur = 15.00
Color = Black
Fill interior with color = Not checked

41) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Symmetric = Checked
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

42) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 5
Color = Background Color

43) Magic Wand Tool
Settings:
Mode = Replace
Match mode = RGB Value
Tolerance = 0
Use all layers = Not checked
Contiguous = Checked
Feather = 0
Anti-alias = Checked
Outside

44) Select new border

45) Effects > Texture Effects > Texture
Settings:
Texture = Linen
Size = 50%, Smoothness = 0
Depth = 2, Ambience = 0
Shininess = 0
Color = White
Angle = 315, Intensity = 50
Elevation = 30

46) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

47) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 3
Color = Any color not in image

48) Magic Wand Tool
Select new border

49) Materials Palette
Change Background to Pattern
Settings:
Pattern = Gold Pattern
Angle = 0, Scale = 100
Texture = Not checked

50) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill selected border with Gold Pattern

51) Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
Settings:
Bevel = #1, Width = 2
Smoothness = 0, Depth = 2
Ambience = 0, Shininess = 0
Color = White, Angle = 315
Intensity = 50, Elevation = 30

52) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

53) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 20
Color = Any color not in image

54) Magic Wand Tool
Select new border

55) Activate remaining graphic
Edit > Copy

56) On Frame image
Edit > Paste Into Selection

57) Effects > Plugins > Simple > Diamonds

58) Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
Settings:
Bevel = #2, Width = 12
Smoothness = 7, Depth = 7
Ambience = -7 (Minus)
Shininess = 20

59) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

60) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 3
Color = Any color not in image

61) Magic Wand Tool
Select new border

62) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill selected border with Gold Pattern

63) Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel
Settings:
Bevel = #1, Width = 2
Smoothness = 0, Depth = 2
Ambience = 0, Shininess = 0

64) Image > Add Borders
Settings:
Size in pixels = 1
Color = Black

65) Selections > Select None

66) Layers > New Raster Layer

67) Add Watermark(s)

68) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer
Settings:
Set compression value to = 20 - 30
Chroma subsampling = YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1 (None)
Save Exif data = Not checked

Do NOT Close Frame



Background

69) Selection Tool (S) > Custom selection

Vertical = 0, Horizontal = 5
Opacity = 50, Blur = 15.00
Color = Black
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

79) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling
Settings:
Corner = Checked
Vertical = Checked
Vertical offset (%) = 0
Transition (%) = 50

80) Materials Palette
Change Background Pattern
Settings:
Pattern = Brushed BG Pattern

81) Layers > New Raster Layer

82) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

83) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill new layer with Brushed BG Pattern

84) Materials Palette
Change Background to Color
Settings:
Color = Your Background color
Texture = Not checked

85) Layers > New Raster Layer
Settings:
Blend mode = Soft Light
Opacity = 100
Link set = 0
Highlight in layers palette = Not checked
Layer is visible = Checked
Lock transparency = Not checked

86) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground color

87) Layers > New Raster Layer
Settings:
Blend mode = Soft Light

88) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill new layer with Background color

89) Layers > New Raster Layer
Settings:
Blend mode = Normal

90) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground color

91) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity of layer to 59
(or a setting of your liking)

92) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer

Now you can assemble the stationery in LC or OE/Windows Mail.
